EU Parliament Takes Half a Step to Counter Obesity

17 June 2010

The decision of the EU Parliament on 16th June to move towards common minimum standards for food labelling is a step in the right direction.

The decision goes some way to providing better information on the calorie content, salt, sugar and fat content plus added protein, unsaturated fats and fibre and possibly better information on the country of origin of ingredients. But consumer groups have argued that it does not fully address consumer concerns and will do little to stem the wave of obesity. They also argue that food industry lobbyists have unduly influenced the outcome.
