Pope Says Use of Condoms Can Be Acceptable

21 November 2010

While Catholic charities such as Caritas do much to support health and development, the impact of the Vatican's assertions on the use of condoms has been a serious barrier to progress in HIV/AIDS prevention, even though most Catholics reject such views. The Pope is reported as saying that use of condoms could be acceptable in certain cases where the intention is to reduce the risk of infection. This represents a very significant change in the Vatican's position.

The Holy See has rigorously pursued its opposition to the use of condoms through its representation as a permanent observer at the UN and its mission in Geneva , it was granted the status of full but non-voting membership of the UN in 2004.
